Fire Fighting

Fire Fighting

Image

Firefighting is the act of extinguishing fires. A firefighter suppresses and extinguishes fires to prevent loss of life, and/or destruction of property and the environment. Firefighters may provide many other valuable services to the community they serve, such as emergency medical services. Firefighting is a highly technical skill that requires professionals who have spent years training in both general firefighting techniques and specialized areas of expertise.

A fire extinguisher, or extinguisher, is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the ceiling, endangers the user or otherwise requires the expertise of a fire department. Typically, a fire extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent which can be discharged to extinguish a fire.

Dry Chemical Powder Type Fire Extinguisher

Image

ABC dry chemical is usually a mix of monoammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate, the former being the active one. The mix between the two agents is usually 40–60%, 60-40%, or 90-10% depending on local standards worldwide.

Water CO2 Type Fire Extinguisher

Water and Foam fire extinguishers extinguish the fire by taking away the heat element of the fire triangle. Foam agents also separate the oxygen element from the other elements.

Water extinguishers are for Class A fires only - they should not be used on Class B or C fires. The discharge stream could spread the flammable liquid in a Class B fire or could create a shock hazard on a Class C fire.

Foam has the ability to form an aqueous film which quickly over water-insoluble hydrocarbon fuel surfaces causing rapid fire extinguishment. Also it provides excellent penetrating and wetting qualities when used on class a fires. Hence, foam extinguishers are ideal for fires involving volatile liquids and freely burning materials.

CO2 Type Fire Extinguisher

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Extinguishers are distinguished by a black coloured band around the top of the cylinder.

Carbon dioxide is a non-conductive and non-corrosive gas used to reduce the amount of oxygen available to the fire. Carbon dioxide is extracted from the atmosphere and stored at high pressure in the liquid state within a fire extinguisher.

Fire Hydrant is a pipe that allocates water from a main location to the required place in order to control and reduce fire. The allocation of water is controlled by regulator. An Automatic Sprinkler provides a series of smaller pipelines and small holes which dispense water at the occurrence of fire. Fire Hydrants and Automatic Sprinkler System has become a common must have and one of the most important tool to control fire.
